Housing

There are 92 homes in Hagwilget. Hagwilget Village Council has mortgage with Royal Bank of Canada under the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Social Housing for 10 housing units for another 10 years. We have renovated over the past 4 year 55 of the 92 homes.

Housing waiting list of 33 people, with 7 serviced lots available.

If individuals are applying for house they must submit a letter of request to Hagwilget Village Council requesting there name be added to the Housing List. There are three options open to Housing Applicants they are as follows:

1. Social Housing Program through Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation.
Disadvantage: the home & land remain property of the Hagwilget Village Council until the mortgage is repaid in full.
Advantage: Home owner pays rent based on there income starting with 25% of there income or a maximum rent payment of (Lower End Market rental rate) established by CMHC. A 3 bedroom home rents of maximum rent of $515.00 no higher than that. The Maintenance is responsibility of Hagwilget Village as well as insurance.
2. Hagwilget Village Council owned housing. The home owner never gets title the title remains property of Hagwilget Village Council. Rent is set by the Village Council at what ever the mortgage payments are with the financial institute. Maintenance and Insurance are responsible of the Village Council
3. Individual owned housing the onus is all on home owner. House design, qualifying for a mortgage and in some cases construction. Hagwilget Village Council will apply for the housing subsidy from Indian Northern Affairs Canada. The home owner must be able to qualify for a mortgage with a financial institute to be eligible for this program.

Capital:

1. Water Treatment Plant:
Water treatment plant was completed in 2001 this is slow sand filtration and water intake and reservoir total cost was 3.3 million dollars
2. Waste Water Treatment up grade: we have completed the feasibility study, we are in design currently. These improvement will improve existing waste water treatment lagoon, outfall installing aeration and some of the distribution system. Value approximately 2.0 million
3. Roads and Drainage; we are completing the feasibility study. We will be submitting a request for design budget to improve our roads.
4. We have completed the feasibility study for reserve expansion and submitted a report to Indian Northern Affairs Canada waiting hear what their response is.
